When you are planning your greenhouse,
you have to decide if it will be attached to your home or if it
will be freestanding. When you are making that decision, you
will be thinking about the types of plants and/or vegetables
that you will grow. You also need to consider the layout of
your space. You will need to accommodate your electrical,
water, and lighting systems. You have to decide
on how much workspace you will need for repotting your
plants, planting your seedlings, and so on. Also, you need to
layout the space where your plants will grow.
Some of the equipment you will need for your greenhouse
is:
Water Supply
Water is important for plants to grow. You can water your
plants with a garden hose that reaches from a nearby faucet to
the inside of your greenhouse. However, consider the type of
structure you are building and the distance it will be from
your home and your utility sources.
If you building a freestanding structure, you may want the
greenhouse to have its own water supply and an irrigation
system. This can be included in your building budget. Also,
make sure you have adequate drainage.
Vents
Proper ventilation is important. You do not want your
greenhouse to get too hot nor do you want it to be cold in
winter.
Thermostats
Maintaining the correct temperature is very important to the
success of your greenhouse. You should have a cooling and
heating thermostat. They should be placed in the center of
the greenhouse at plant height but away from direct
contact with water and sunlight.
Exhaust Fans
The air in the greenhouse will be warm and humidity will
rise. You will need to keep the air circulating in your
structure.
Benches and Shelves
You will need a large work bench or table as a workspace for
repotting plants and so on. You will need shelves to store
empty pots, store supplies, and you will want to store plants,
such as flowers, at different heights. You may also want
to have a garden bench as a resting place while you look
through various books and magazines related to your
gardening.
Timers
You will probably want your heating, irrigation, and misting
systems to turn on and off at certain times. With a timer, you
can take of your other household tasks and errands without
worrying about getting to the greenhouse in time.
Floor
Pay careful attention to the floor of your greenhouse. If
you decide to plant in the floor of the greenhouse, you should
put a ground cover down such as sand, brick, or gravel. You may
want to put a ground cover cloth over the area and put fresh
soil on top. This will help to protect your soil from
weeds.
To maintain your greenhouse at an optimal level and to
be successful in growing your plants and vegetables, you should
list the equipment and supplies you will need. You should read
all you can about greenhouses. This will help with your
planning and your budget. You can shop around for the best
bargains for the equipment and for ideas on how to set up your
greenhouse.
