Greenhouse Structures

Greenhouses can be freestanding or attached structures. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The decision is yours but you should consider the visual appeal that will be created when you build your greenhouse.

Attaching a greenhouse to your existing home is the same as adding an additional room. You will want to design the greenhouse so that it adds to the visual appeal of your home and not detract from it. The greenhouse will be attached to your roofline so you have to make sure that the construction is sufficient so that rain, snow, and leaves do not collect in your drain pipes.

You can attach your greenhouse to your home along an outside wall. You can have the door open to an interior room in the house or it can be outside with a short walk from an interior room such as the kitchen.

If you build the greenhouse so that it is attached to your roof, you want to make sure that it still gets as much sunlight as possible. You may need additional lighting to compensate for the loss of overhead sunlight.

Having a large yard gives you the freedom of deciding how large your freestanding greenhouse will be. Your budget is also a consideration. A freestanding greenhouse situated in the right place will get maximum sunlight. The shape and design depends on Greenhousewhat you plan to grow. A freestanding structure can be adapted to the land and constructed so that it takes maximum advantage of drainage and irregular heights in your yard. With a freestanding greenhouse, you can have a lot of headroom. You will also have more space for repotting your plants.

A freestanding greenhouse will need its own electrical and water supply systems. This will add to your utility expenses. Check your household budget to make sure you can stand this increase.

A disadvantage of a freestanding greenhouse is that it may be some distance from the house. In winter, this may create a problem of easily getting to it.

An advantage is that a freestanding greenhouse can be a retreat. It is a distance from the house and if you have comfortable seating with chairs and table and portable radio, it can be a getaway for a quiet afternoon or evening among your lush vegetation and beautiful flowers.

Large or small, attached or freestanding, your choice of greenhouse should be the one that gives you the most pleasure.
